Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to ask you to guarantee the safety and protection of human rights defenders in Colombia.

María, Jani, Joel and Danelly are brave people. Together with their Indigenous, campesino and black communities, they have been the voices and protectors of our environment and natural resources. Because of their work they are persecuted, threatened and under surveillance, and every day they are at risk of being killed.

Defending human rights and the environment in Colombia should not be a death sentence. There must be guarantees and protection for those who speak out against economic and political interests that attack human rights and the environment.

The right to defend human rights is key to guaranteeing the rights of all people in Colombia. Therefore, the Colombian Congress must create the Commission for the Verification of guarantees to monitor and follow up with the fulfillment of responsibilities to protect defenders, including those who protect the environment and our natural resources.
