Dear Minister,

I am writing to you about the arbitrary detention of Oumar Sylla (alias Foniké Mengué), Souleymane Condé and Thierno Sadou Diallo, activists in favor of democracy and coordinator of the mobilization of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC).

Authorities made at least 400 arbitrary arrests targeting opponents and members of civil society after the presidential election. Several pro-democracy activists had to flee the country illegally to escape prosecution. Several political opponents including opposition leader Celou Dalein Diallo have been prevented from traveling. Some of them had their passports confiscated.

In two months, four people, including three UFDG activists or sympathizers, died while in pre-trial detention in Conakry central prison. They were arrested in connection with the constitutional referendum challenge in March and the presidential election results in October 2020.

The crackdown on dissenting voices must end immediately.

I call on you to release without delay Oumar Sylla, Souleymane Condé, Thierno Sadou Diallo and the other people arbitrarily arrested and the charges against them dropped.
